MORE ON PARALYSIS & SPINAL CORD INJURY

A spinal cord injury usually begins with a sudden, traumatic blow to the neck, back or spine which fractures or dislocates vertebrae. The damage usually begins at the moment of impact when displaced bone fragments, disc material, or ligaments bruise or tear into spinal cord tissue. Most injuries to the spine do not completely sever the cord but are more likely to crush and destroy nerve cells which carry signals up and down the spinal cord. Some injuries will allow for almost complete recovery, while others will often result in complete paralysis.
